Use Lite-XL Alternate of VS Code

When I was started programming I was a huge fan of VSCode. I think it's the best editor ever for programming. but now I started using lightweight code editor instead of VS Code named Lite-XL. It is a minimal code editor which is written in Lua and C language. Lite-XL editor comprises a multi-line textbox begun with the SDL graphics library. So, you can use Lite-XL alternate of VS Code. It has all the advanced features and plugins. It takes much space in your disk.

As a programmer or a developer, they always want the best editor for them to use. Lite-XL provides something practicals, smartest, smallest, and fastest implements as simply as possible so that you can customize and enlarges your Lite-XL easily. Lite-XL does not deliver more features itself but if you want to extend it then you have to fork the source repository and then extend. Now you should use Lite-XL alternate of VS Code.

Lite-XL is an actively controlled branch of the Lite editor which supplies all the basic features that VS Code has. Now let's see why Lite-XL is better than VS Code.

If your favorite code editor is VS Code then why do you try an alternative to VS Code? Lite-XL is also a code editor as VS Code. There is a little bit of technical difference between both. VS Code is built on a chief of the Electron structure that lets developers build cross-platform desktop apps by web technologies. VS Code is a web application that works inside a frameless primary window.

An alternative of VS Code, Lite-XL local desktop application developed by the SDL graphics library that serves above Linux, macOS, and Windows because SDL is a cross-platform graphics library like Skia by Google. Lite-XL doesn't render elements like VS Code in chrome view. Lite-XL takes around 10 MB of physical memory while VS Code takes 400 MB of physical memory. VS Code attaches new features every day which takes 300 MB of disk memory without any extension and we will not get shocked if it takes one gigabyte after years.

Have you ever heard what is VS Codium? and have you ever thought that VS Code's source code is MIT licensed, Microsoft makes releases with different non-FLOSS permission by adding a kind of commercial flavor that adds telemetry? VS Codium is almost the same as VS Code editor. It uses the above-average resources of VS Code editor.

Now let's see how to use and customize Lite-XL as VS Code editor.

As we know Lite-XL has features named menu and tree view which come as plugins in Lite-XL. It has some crucial features like a status bar, code executor, file search, and some advanced features included. It is just a text editor without any plugins. To make it more advanced you need to install plugins in Lite-XL editor.

First, you need the latest version of the Lite-XL editor and then open the preferences file (init.lua) and add the following line to enable VS Code’s default theme.
core.reload_module("colors.vscode-dark")

Lite-XL has pre-installed plugins as VS Code like auto-complete, tree-view, context menu, syntax highlighting for some languages, etc. But you need to install a piece of cake plugin to make Lite-XL like VS Code by using data/plugins.

After installing this plugin you need to install some of more plugins like indent guide, minimap, and some auto syntax plugins if you want.

Conclusion

Visual Studio Code is backed by Microsoft and has a larger developer audience around it. But Lite-XL is new and still has a small developer audience. Nowadays, native application development is so little and getting replaced by impure application development created by Electron. Hybrid application development frameworks motivate developers to make native-like hybrid apps so fast by caching performance problems with modern hardware. However, frameworks like Flutter and SDL offer better performance first solutions to develop cross-platform applications.
